Refugio Amazonas Wildlife Lodge & Machu Picchu Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive | Lima, Peru

Upon arriving in Lima this evening, a member of our staff will transfer you to your hotel, just steps away from the airport.

    Overnight: Lima Airport Ramada

Note: The listed hotels are 4/5 star. Please contact us for information on 3 star options.

Day 2: Lima | Puerto Maldonado | Tambopata National Reserve (Amazon)

Fly to Puerto Maldonado and then continue on to the Tambopata River Port for a 2.5 hour ride aboard long roofed canoes with outboard motors. You will arrive at your rain forest accommodations built on a 200-hectare private reserve of primary forest on the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve. This evening explore along the river's edge with your flashlights in search of the black Caiman.

    Overnight: Refugio Amazonas (B, L, D)

    Day 3: Tambopata National Reserve

A 2-hour hike takes you to Sachavacayoc Lake where you can paddle a catamaran in search of the resident family of five giant river otters (seen by about 30% visitors) and other lakeside wildlife. For a less intense option, you may opt to visit Condenado Lake, a 30-minute hike from the lodge. After lunch, visit a local Farm and Ethnobotanical Garden and then explore a Brazil nut trail and camp. Enjoy dinner and an evening lecture back at the lodge.

    Overnight: Refugio Amazonas (B, L, D)

    Day 4: Tambopata National Reserve

Travel to a clay lick this morning where you may find Dusky headed and Cobalt winged parakeets ingesting clay on a bank; it's an incredible sight. There are several theories as to why parrots in this part of the world eat clay, but no one knows for sure. Later this morning, visit a peccary clay lick. These wild rain forest pigs show up in herds of 5 to 20 individuals to eat clay in the late morning. Though the chances of spotting them are only about 15%, it is well worth the short hike. After lunch, a 30-minute walk from the lodge leads to a 25-meter scaffolding canopy tower, providing access to the plant and animal species of the delicate treetops, including toucans, macaws, and raptors.

    Overnight: Refugio Amazonas (B, L, D)

Day 5: Tambopata National Reserve | Puerto Maldonado | Cusco

Retrace your river and road journey and fly to Cusco. An afternoon tour will take you down Cusco's cobblestone streets and narrow passageways with brightly painted balconies overhead. Dinner this evening is on your own. Choose from many fine restaurants then stroll around the main plaza and enjoy views of the Cathedral lit up at night. Lunch and dinner on your own.

Overnight: Los Portales Cusco Hotel (B)

Day 6: Cusco | Sacred Valley | Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu)

Embark on a journey into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The route follows a winding mountain road with awe-inspiring views of the stunning canyon below. The first stop is the ancient town of Chinchero for a visit to a church containing the oldest examples of paintings from the Cusco School of Art. Then meet with a family of weavers for a demonstration. Enjoy lunch at Ollantaytambo, which still retains the original street plan and foundations designed by the Incas. Observe the Fortress and remains of the sun temple then transfer to the train station for a spectacular ride through the Urubamba river gorge on your way to Machu Picchu.

    Overnight: El Mapi Hotel (B, L, D)

Day 7: Aguas Calientes | Cusco

This morning take a short bus ride to the sacred ruins of Machu Picchu for a private tour. Explore the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, ceremonial fountains and baths, and the Sacred Plazas. Opt for an exhilarating one-hour hike up the steep trail to the summit of Huayna Picchu for a breath-taking bird's-eye view of Machu Picchu. (Tickets must be purchased in advance.) After your visit, take the train back to Ollantaytambo where you will be met by your driver and transferred the rest of the way to Cusco. This evening enjoy dinner on your own at one of Cusco's many fine restaurants.

Overnight: Los Portales Cusco Hotel (B, L)

    Day 8: Cusco | Lima | Depart

Explore Cusco on your own this morning before your flight to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, check in on your own for your international flight. Lunch and dinner are on your own. (B)
