Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge & Machu Picchu Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrive Lima

Upon evening arrival in Lima, you will be met by staff and transferred to your hotel, conveniently located just steps from the Lima airport.

    Overnight: Lima Airport Ramada

Day 2: Lima | Puerto Maldonado | Amazon Rainforest

This morning you will be met by our team and be transferred to the airport in time for your morning flight to Puerto Maldonado, Amazon basin. Upon arrival, you will be met by staff from Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica and transfer to the boarding wharf. A 45-minute boat ride, in canoe equipped with outboard motor, will take you down the Made de Díos River to the lodge.

After a short briefing, settle in to your beautiful cabaña and enjoy lunch in the dining room. Take a siesta, share a refreshing teatime, and get ready for the afternoon excursion. Choose from 14 different excursions available at the Inkaterra lodge. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along one of the nearby trails to discover the Amazon Basin. The trails offer an excellent introduction to the forest environment, winding past impressive trees including the Shihuahuaco and the strangely beautiful strangler fig. Here you'll find excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects.

Tonight we recommend the River by Night excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride downriver from the lodge. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits while searching for nightjars, owls, capybaras, and big caimans.

Afterward, enjoy cocktails at the lodge before dinner. Retire early to your own cabana, or join the local naturalists to talk about the experience of life in the rainforest as you listen to the intriguing sounds of the jungle at night.

    Overnight: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica (B, L, D)

    Day 3: Amazon Rainforest

Rest in bed or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m., for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest. A full buffet breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

This morning you may opt to visit the Sandoval Lake, an excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like, oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, and side-neck turtles.

Return to the Inkaterra lodge for lunch then consider a visit to the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy and Anaconda Walk. Ascending the first tower, 29 meters above the forest ground, begins your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. During this hour-and-a-half expedition, be on the lookout for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and the three-toed sloth. If you wish, you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers.

After your descent from the Canopy, experience the 30-minute Anaconda Walk along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the Aguajales swamps. In this lush ecosystem, you may observe the various species of amphibians, birds, mammals, abundant flora, trees, and perhaps even serpents in this flooded marshland.

Before dinner, visit the Ecomedia Center for the daily nature presentation.

    Overnight: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica (B, L, D)

    Day 4: Amazon Rainforest

This morning take a 45-minute boat ride to Gamitana Creek. Explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to many piranhas, caimans, turtles, and birds. When you reach the embarkation point, board a canoe and navigate your way back downstream, appreciating the abundant flora and fauna along the way.

Return to Gamitana Farm in time for a well-earned picnic lunch, followed by a short, guided tour to see how local farmers raise fruits and vegetables.

Back at the lodge, make time for relaxation with Inkaterra's special services at ENA Spa, located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River facing Rolin Island — a great spot for watching an Amazonian sunset. The ENA Spa is available from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., offering traditional massage, aromatherapy, and reflexology services.

    Overnight: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica (B, L, D)

Day 5: Amazon Rainforest | Puerto Maldonado | Cusco | Urubamba - Sacred Valley

Enjoy a full breakfast before departure. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you may visit the Butterfly House. Peru boasts the greatest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, a showcase for the variety, beauty, and adaptability of these fascinating insects.

Transfer to the airport in Puerto Maldonado in time for your flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, meet your Andean Discovery guide and driver to begin your journey into the Sacred Valley. The route from Cusco follows a winding mountain road with awe-inspiring views of the stunning canyon below, formed by the Urubamba river. Feel the temperature rise as you descend into the warm valley. Transfer down the valley and check in at the cozy Andean lodge and spa, Sol y Luna, located near the community of Urubamba.

    Overnight: Sol & Luna Spa (B, L, D)

Day 6: Sacred Valley | Pisac Market

The first stop this morning is the indigenous market in Pisac, a centuries-old market that sells a variety of foods and colorful indigenous handicrafts. Explore the ancient Inca ruins above — the largest fortress-city complex of the Incas and one of the largest of ancient America. Your guide will lead you on a walking tour through the ruins and hillside terraces, part of the Incas' sophisticated agricultural system. (Optional hike to the ruins from the Pisac market).

After lunch, travel to Chinchero, known for its traditional weaving techniques. Visit the home of a family and observe ancient weaving techniques that have been passed down from generations. This afternoon, return to your lodge and prepare for a delicious dinner.

    Overnight: Sol & Luna Spa (B, L, D)

Day 7: Sacred Valley | Machu Picchu

This morning continue down the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of the ninth Inca, Pachacuti, one of the most important Inca rulers. Pachacuti conquered the region of Ollantaytambo and built the town and a ceremonial center.

Today Ollantaytambo is thought to be the only remaining example of pre-Columbian urban planning. It still retains the original street plan and foundations designed by the Incas. Observe the Fortress, including the remains of the Sun Temple and transfer to the Ollantaytambo train station in time for a spectacular train ride with your guide through the Urubamba river gorge on your way to Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will be greeted by Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel staff and led to the luxurious eco-lodge. The lodge is situated in 13 acres of cloud forest garden along the Urubamba River.

Opt from several afternoon activities including a nature walk in the orchid pavilion, bird observation, or relax on your own. Andean spa treatments, including a natural sweat lodge-sauna, are available for an extra cost. (An additional visit to Machu Picchu may be scheduled in advance for this afternoon at an extra cost).

Overnight: Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel (B, L, D)

Day 8: Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) | Cusco

This morning take a short bus ride to the sacred ruins at Machu Picchu for a comprehensive private tour. Explore these extraordinary ruins with your guide and visit the industrial area, the Temple of the Sun, the Royal Tomb, ceremonial fountaints and baths, and the Sacred Plazas. Opt for an exhilarating 1-hour hike up the steep trail to the summit of Huayna Picchu (Young Peak), for a birds-eye view of Machu Picchu.

After your visit, transfer to Aguas Calientes for lunch and board the train back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, you will be met by your driver and transferred the rest of the way to Cusco. This evening enjoy dinner on your own at one of Cusco's many fine restaurants.

Overnight: Picoaga Hotel Cusco (B, L)

    Day 9: Cusco | Lima

This morning embark on a privately guided City Tour of Cusco. The city's unique combination of Spanish colonial architecture, built on the enduring stone foundations of the Incas, is sure to intrigue you. Travel down Cusco's cobblestone streets and narrow passageways with brightly painted balconies overhead.

Quechua-speaking descendants of the Incas fill the streets, proof that this ancient culture is still active today. Your visit includes the historic Plaza de Armas, Coricancha, Inca's Sun Temple, Incan fortress of Sacsayhuaman, and ceremonial pools of Tambo Machay.

This afternoon you will be transferred to the airport in time for your flight to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, check in on your own for your international flight. Lunch and dinner are on your own. (B)
