Gorilla Trekking

Few wildlife experiences can compare to gorilla trekking. Just over 600 of these beautiful endangered animals now survive in the wild, making the chance to see them living and playing together all the more special. Of course, spotting animals in the wild is unlike seeing them at a zoo or a wildlife park, where you can simply stroll up and take a peek. Before you can encounter them, you need to venture into their habitat - and with gorillas, this means trekking through the rainforest, with Uganda being the best place to do so.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the place to discover the gorilla. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this reserve boasts some glorious rainforest terrain, which the gorilla calls home. And it is also where you will find the Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, which is the only complex of its kind within the park.

Offering you a slice of luxury in the untamed wilderness, the camp provides the perfect base for rewarding gorilla treks. Blending in seamlessly with the natural environment, it consists of eight double tents located on raised wooden platforms, with a host of luxurious extras - think wooden verandas with glorious views and bathtubs overlooking the wilderness.

And the base is more than just luxurious. Staying here can offer you the chance to hear more about the amazing gorillas from an expert, with lectures often being held around traditional African campfires in the evening - a magical experience.

Gorilla tracking typically begins first thing in the morning, following a briefing from your guide. Tracking a family group, you will make your way through the beautiful wilderness landscape with experienced guides. Then, you will be able to sit and watch as a gorilla family goes about its usual activities, such as eating and playing.

Combine your gorilla trekking experience with a game safari:

If you're keen to discover a wider array of animals, why not combine your gorilla trekking experience with a safari in Kenya? This would give you the opportunity to discover the delights of the famous Masai Mara before flying to Uganda for your gorilla-tracking adventure.

Wonderful for seeing the so-called Big Five (elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards and rhinos), this reserve is deservedly one of the most well-regarded on the planet. As well as the big five, more than 300 bird species call the park home. See hippos snorting in the river, and herds of wildebeest grazing in the sun.

It's worth remembering that there are a host of activities you can book to make your time here all the more unforgettable, such as balloon rides over the plains.

What to know before you go:

Before going gorilla trekking, it is worth bearing in mind that there could be up to five hours of hiking through undergrowth to tackle. So, you do need to be reasonably fit. You will also need to be prepared for the climate, so pack appropriately with breathable, light clothes and plenty of sun cream.
