Arusha National Park

    Arusha National Park

This exceptionally beautiful area is divided into three parts Mt. Meru, the Ngurdoto Crater and the Momela Lakes which means it has a wide range of habitats. Arusha is not known for its big game viewing but offers a wide range of smaller animals, plenty of birds and breathtaking highland Afromontane forests.

The nearest park to Arusha city – northern Tanzania’s safari capital – Arusha park is a multi-faceted jewel, typically unnoted by safari goers, despite providing the chance to explore a beguiling diversity of habitats within a couple of hours road transfer.

The entrance gate leads into shadowy mountain forest populated by inquisitive blue monkeys and vibrant turacos and trogons – the sole place on the northern campaign circuit where the gymnastic black-and-white colobus monkey is frequently seen. Within the interior of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs enclose a good miry floor dotted with herds of buffalo and swine.

Further north, rolling grass-covered hills enclose the effortless beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a unique hue of blue. Their shallows generally coloured pink with thousands of flamingos, the lakes support a diverse choice of resident and migrant water bird, and shaggy waterbucks show their giant lyre-shaped horns on the watery fringes. Giraffes glide across the grass-covered hills, between grazing equine herds, whereas pairs of wide-eyed antelope dart into scrubby bush like overgrown hares on lean legs.

Although elephants are uncommon in Arusha Park, and lions absent altogether, leopards and hyenas easily seen slinking around within the early morning and late afternoon. Often each evening and each dawn the veil of cloud on the eastern horizon clears, revealing the majestic peaks of the mountain.
