Worldwide Luxury Specialist

Experienced Worldwide agent.

After leaving school John joined the Royal Navy, serving 6 years as a gunner and seaman, travelling to some of the more and less glamorous corners of the globe on service.

Leaving the Navy to seek a new challenge, John set of for a years backpacking, followed by a couple of ski seasons and several periods of living abroad in various parts of the planet.

Not being able to sustain this lifestyle forever John decided the sensible move was to return to England and move into travel, using his wealth of experience to send other people on holiday. He spent the next 6 years working for Dial-a-Flight, further extending his knowledge of all things travel and becoming an expert in countless worldwide destinations.

John has been a friend of Pure Zanzibar from its conception, and from his desk at Dial-a-Flight arranged all the flights for Pure Zanzibar customers for over 2 years, during which time he visited Zanzibar and fell in love with it.

Again seeking a new challenge, he decided to make the transition and move to Pure Zanzibar in October 2010, becoming a manager within a year and bringing his worldwide travel experience to the team. He has since been back to Zanzibar, staying a good range of properties across the island.

John last travelled to Tanzania in October 2013, staying in several more luxury lodges, including Kilindi, Kasha, Mnemba Island and the Hideaway. Mnemba Island was very special indeed, it would be hard to find a more perfect beach destination.

To date John has visited 48 different countries, across every continent! If forced to choose, New Zealand would come out on top, its mixture of rugged scenery, beaches and olde world feel is hard to draw a comparison to.

Kilindi: Pure Safari Agent Review.

This was my second visit to Kilindi, and I can confirm that the same high standards are still being met. This resort is simply a fantastic place to spend time, the rooms are all incredible, but some are more private, and less mobile people should be located closer to the pool area, however your butler will provide service wherever you are.

The food, service and ambience are all still first class.

Hi John, I was just chatting to my husband at the weekend and said we must get in contact with you and let you know how it went. It was absolutely brilliant. From been picked up by our guide in killamanjaro to been dropped off at Zanzibar everything went above our expectations. The safari was most definetly the highlight. Our guide from Kibo Richie was great. He was funny, very knowledgeable and made sure we got to see all we wanted plus so much more. Also the accommodation was perfect and the staff looked after us so well. It was so nice than to get to Zanzibar for chill out time and wow you didn't lie about that room. Literally was the most perfect place to relax. We've definetly been bitten by the safari bug and have already decided next year's holiday will be a safari in Africa. You really did listen to what we wanted but actually made it so much better. I can't complain about anything! I'll be most definetly in contact in the coming months to organise out next trip. Thanks so much and if I can put a review anywhere else just let me know. Pamela
  • 02-11-16 Pure Safari Review - Serenity Villa

Dear John, I just wanted to take a moment to send a message of thanks for arranging our holiday to Zanzibar. We had an unforgettable holiday! The accommodation and planning you put into the flights was just brilliant. The value for money with the accommodation was superb at Serenity Villa. Having you arrange everything made it very stress free and gave us a real sense of security whilst we were out there, as we knew if we had any issues we could call upon your expertise. We have been recommending yourselves and Zanzibar to all our friends. It's a fantastic place for a brilliant cultural experience but also a real adventure! We did so much whilst we were out there and ate amazing food in so many different places- even in a little road side 'caf' in the villages the food was great! Thanks again and if we are visiting again in future we will be sure to call upon you. Best wishes, Rosie and Paul

  • 10-10-16 Pure Safari Review - Kenya

Hi John, Just a quick word to thank you for planning the most amazing holidays! You have a knack for knowing exactly want we what before we even know it! Spending the whole week in Maasai Mara was a very good decision, as it allowed us to see lots of wildlife without spending endless time travelling between reserves. We would also like to thank you for booking the safari. Our guide Peter was extraordinary and made the week so much better!! We was very kind, funny, a good driver and extremely knowledgable about the wildlife, including birds, which was a very pleasant surprise. If you book any more safaris with them, please ask for Peter! Thank you once more. When we return to Africa we will contact you again and will be recommending you to all our friends. Best regards, Catarina
  • 01-09-16 Pure Safari Review - Zanzibar

Good Morning John, I wanted to send you a quick email to thank you for organising what turned out to be a fantastic holiday. Everything from the flights, transfers and hotels went very smoothly with no hitches. The company that you use for transfers etc were always on time, very courteous and very knowledgable, we couldn't fault them. The shooting star was in a lovely setting, the food was great and the staff left you wanting for nothing. We moved on to Langi Langi, which whilst not quite of the same standard, was perfectly adequate and in a great setting to walk around a little more to try some other restaurants etc. We did some amazing things, from Stone Town (a crazy busy place with some great history), snorkelling trips with amazing beach bbqs, giant tortoises, the list was endless. We also saw quite a lot of poverty which for some reason I wasn't expecting to quite such a degree, but I guess its much the same in a lot of places. We can only hope that some of the money from tourism may go some way to helping, although speaking to local guides etc I'm not too sure thats the case. Anyway, thanks again John. From start to finish you were very knowleadgable, very proffesional and helped organise a wonderful experience which we will long remember. With very best regards, Nicky

  • Feedback - Belize

    Dear John,

Our holiday was wonderful, so thank you very much indeed for all your hard work and care. Since our return we have had all three children, daughter in law and two grandsons here, so the housekeeping has been a little full on, but now we are down to ourselves and the cats, so there is time to catch up.

  • 24-08-14 Client Feedback

    Hi John.

    Well we are back!.

All I can say is, all of my initial concerns have been proved ungrounded!!. You did a fantastic job and over-all I am very impressed and pleased with what you put together for me. The over-all package suited my family just right with things to suit all. Ill start with Zanzibar and go on from there.

All of the flights, transfers were seamless and the ground staff on the whole were courteous/helpful and polite and did what they could to help. Kichanga Lodge was great and my son and mother loved it. Nigel and Sylvie (owners) were extremely professional and attentive and made a point of talking to us personally every day. (Its evident that Nigel is an astute businessman) But he did everything he could to ensure we were informed and comfortable. The staff (all of them) went out of their way).

Selous was in short brilliant!!, Minor niggles like a shower that didn't drain properly were overshadowed by the bigger picture and being mindful that we were back of beyond, it did not bother us - just turned the water pressure down and made no issue of it, And - sharing the same room with my mother did start to get abit tedious (separate rooms in future I think). Again Clive and Raine (managers) went out of their way with personal butlers and drivers. They again spoke to us personally each day to agree what the following days agenda would be. Clive even went out of his way to accommodate additional request for me to do a night safari with lamps(he explained that this was not normal), and took me fishing on the Rufigi - an unexpected extra experience (and yes I caught 3 medium tiger fish) quite a feat considering my questionable fishing skills.

The Selous safari was at times breathtaking and brilliant, with Maharuf (our driver) friendly and very knowledgeable, driving for hours to find what we were looking for and on the whole he delivered.

I know we have paid for this in full, but all I can say is a personal thank-you from me and my family for

    1) Arranging this brilliant package for me - at such a reasonable price
    2) Personally from me - putting up with my distrust (in the early throws of arranging this) and not to mention my endless questions - you have been very patient.

An excellent and professional service, and I would have NO hesitation in recommending you and your company to all and sundry going forward. (Trip-advisor reviews to follow shortly).

Personally - thank-you John!! Hopefully speak soon.

    Neil and family

  • Customer Feedback 29 Jan 14

It is a pleasure to be acquainted with someone with such a flair for communication, well informed and with a strong empathy for a clients requirements along with first hand knowledge of the places you are promoting. It can be rare to find such good service these days. I myself have spent most my working career in both sales and marketing within the resort, travel and leisure industry and understand the importance of service.

  • 05-11-13 Customer Feedback Selous Impala Camp - Kilindi

Well, what can I say. Our honeymoon was wonderful. The Selous Impala camp was fantastic. We were collected from the runway by two guides, who took us to the camp by river. After an introduction by Barbara, we had lunch, a chance to unpack and then we were off on our first excursion. The guides, Barbara and Sylvia and the waiting staff are all extremely professional, informative and very friendly. The camp is ‘open’ to the wilds, with both elephant and giraffe seen wandering through both day and night during our stay! It was a very surreal experience lying in bed around midnight watching 3 giraffe have dinner about 8ft away from the tent!! Unlike some other safaris, meals are taken at tables of two, which was absolutely fine for us on honeymoon, but worth noting in case others travelling may wish to sit together. However, there is time over drinks at the campfire before dinner to interact with others and find out about them and their day. The animals in Selous, while not as numerous as those seen in the Serengeti , were quite varied and you get the chance to get pretty close. We got to within 6ft of two lionesses, who were relaxing under a tree in the shade!!

We then move to Kilindi. As you know, this is amazing hotel. We arrived to a glass of bubbly and a cold towel and basically, after 7 days, we didn’t want to leave! Thanks to you we had villa 3, which was great. Close to both the beach and the bar area and with a roof terrace where we had breakfast every morning while watching the local fisherman set off on their day. Our butler, Vicki was lovely and nothing was too much trouble. This is an absolutely ideal honeymoon destination, with enough interaction if wanted, but privacy, relaxation and one of the most comfortable (if not the biggest) bed I’ve ever slept in! The food was great too and dinner on the beach is definitely recommended.

All in all, it was a fantastic trip and I would definitely recommend both you and Pure Zanzibar in the future.

Many thanks for all your help.

  • 04-11-13 Client Feedback - Selous Riverside, Kichanga Lodge, Kisiwa House.

    Hi John,

I Just wanted to say a huge thank you for our holiday.

Every part of the holiday has been fabulous, every taxi transfer on time, the three places we stayed were all great....We have just had the most wonderful time and I can’t believe we achieved this holiday on the budget I gave you, it was absolutely brilliant.

Thank you for all your care and advice, you really provided a 5* service.

    Many thanks again

  • 16-10-13 Client Feedback

    Hi John,

We honestly have to say it was the best holiday we have ever been on! Whether it was because it was our honeymoon and the people out there made it extra special for that reason I can't tell, but all hotels/rooms were fab! If anything, we were hoping for a lucky upgrade at Breezes to a honeymoon/see view room, the hotel in general/staff were so good! Safari at Selous Riverside in selous was incredible and Clive/Raine deserve medals for hospitality! Very sad to come home, we have recommended your company to friends, thank you!

  • 23-09-13 Customer Feedback - The Palms

Usually I book holidays myself via the various online hotel and flight finding web sites but on this occasion went back to using an agent - mainly because of the nature of the holiday as it was our honeymoon and were going somewhere a bit off the mainstream resorts.

I sent purezanzibar a brief email and from the outset had, what can only be described as, a superlative experience dealing with them.

The agent, John, had a wealth of personal experience on Zanzibar and made some excellent suggestions for the 2 weeks including a week at 'The Palms'. For a honeymoon this was just fantastic, it was just as he had said - being treated like royalty.

A first class company with first class staff offering first class holidays. Thank you so much!!

  • 16-09-13 Client Feedback - Baraza / Hideaway

    Hi John

The best parts were-The food, service and spa at the Baraza, truly amazing! We felt very relaxed and very much like VIP's. It was small exclusive but stunning, private, very clean and friendly. We would definitely recommend this resort it was beautiful.

The beach at the hideaway was picture perfect and we were upgraded to the presidential suite!!! The two resorts were very different but complimented each other.

  • 09-09-13 Client Feedback Safari and Beach

Pure Zanzibar Service – fast, friendly, honest and professional. We appreciated the way you took our individual needs as a family into account and gave an honest assessment of the various options for meeting them.

Selous Riverside Camp – was fabulous - the highlight of our trip. Thank you for pointing us in the direction of the Selous! Amazing wildlife, very close at hand. Boat trip was great. The camp was comfortable, with a lovely atmosphere (bushbabies at the bar). The managers, Raine and Clive (Klaus?) were great, responsive to our needs and requests and fantastic with the children – Raine looked after them for several hours one morning to enable Jakob and me to go on the early morning walking safari. Raine, who did the cooking, also coped very well with having 2 vegetarians to stay. The food was very good. The little swimming pool was clean, cool and refreshing (so ignore the complaint about it in one of the Trip Advisor reviews!). The guides were very professional, very pleasant and really expert on the wildlife around us. We all wished we had been staying there even longer. Only caveat is that it is a bit further outside the reserve than we had originally expected.

The Karafuu Hotel – was in a beautiful and quiet setting. The Tennis courts were fine (we used them) and the swimming pool was marvellous (we spent an awful lot of time there). The cottages were pretty and spacious. The food was good and plentiful and – again – there was plenty for the vegetarians to eat. The Manager, Zacharias, was very helpful, and keen to stress that the cooks could do more to vary the fare on offer for us if we asked (we saw no need). The service was generally very good, but occasionally patchy, and a broken hairdryer socket didn’t get fixed during our time there despite our request. The dive school looked OK for scuba, but the snorkelling trips they organised were pretty thin on safety features (eg no life jackets for the children) – our only real gripe. On balance, we would recommend the hotel to others.

Zanzibar Unique – were very friendly and efficient, organising some very interesting trips for us. The spice tour was excellent, far exceeding our expectations. And we saw humpback whales as well as dolphins. We ended up varying the schedule and having two days of trips rather than one , to enable a visit to the Dhow Builders and the Turtle Sanctuary at the northern tip of Zanzibar (though at rather a steep additional price!).

Kisiwa House – was simply wonderful and very helpful – staff kept the restaurant open an extra hour for us to have breakfast when we came back late fromn church (we’d assumed we’d have to miss it). Great atmosphere and very comfortable.

Rock Restaurant – was amazing – thank you for your recommendation. Stunningly beautiful and great food.

  • 27-08-13 Client Feedback - Selous Riverside

    Hi John.

We had a brilliant safari at Selous Riverside, loved the camp, we were treated really well and had fabulous trips out on the boat and jeep. Our guide was lovely too, and really informative. We will be recommending your company and the camp to our friends and family! We've arrived today in Zanzibar and the hotel here seems wonderful too. So many many thanks for organising everything.
