From a young age Ed had a passion for travel and for the natural world. After leaving school Ed studied Social Anthropology and Philosophy at the University of Kent. Graduating with a First Class degree he went on to become a fully qualified teacher with a specialism in Religious Education.

Early travels took in the Americas and much of Europe, but Ed was always interested in travelling further afield.

After working as a teacher in many different schools throughout the South East of England, and contributing to ongoing research in educational theory, Ed set off on a series of adventures that were to last throughout much of his early adult life.

For several years he lived in the southern hemisphere, spending around 2 years in New Zealand and 2 years in Australia. In both countries Ed worked in the tourism industry, and continued his anthropological research.

Ed has also travelled extensively throughout South and South East Asia, again finding new and exciting places to explore and investigate. He has a particular love of the ocean and water sports and has visited an incredible amount and diversity of different beaches around the world.

Since returning to the UK on a more permanent basis around 6 years ago, Ed became one of the first members of the Pure Zanzibar and Pure Safari team, joining Tarquin, Susie and Nick in growing the company from humble beginnings in the shed in the woods where it all began.

Since joining Pure, Ed progressed naturally to Senior Sales Manager as the team grew, and also became involved with social media marketing and content development on the growing family of websites.

Ed has travelled to Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania on 4 separate occasions, flying all the main routes and spending a couple of weeks in Africa each time, taking in both safari and beach. With his partner, he has stayed in almost all the hotels in Zanzibar that we recommend, (for at least one night each time, and sometimes for longer!), and would be happy to share his first hand experiences with you.

    Dear Ed I'm sorry I haven't been in touch before you emailed me. I had great intentions of getting in touch as soon as we were back from our hols to let you know what a wonderful time we had but life has been very hectic since and here we are over four weeks after returning and only two weeks to go before Christmas. To get back to our holiday, from beginning to the end it was amazing. Saadanni was a truly wonderful experience, John and Babs who are the managers are very nice and their staff are lovely the food was delicious and accommodation charming. Breezes was as you said a most enjoyable beach resort. The accommodation was very good but I was a bit disappointed at the location, we were way back from the beach and I expected to be virtually on the beach. The food and atmosphere at Breezes were just right for both families and couples. I hope this helps Ed. Thank you once again for all your help in organising a very Memorable holiday for us.     We had a wonderful safari experience and Hubert our lovely guide was very reliable and knowledgeable, he made sure that we saw all of the animals and had an amazing instinct as to where the animals were. The only niggle was the first camp in Ndutu was a bit tired, tents were not in very good condition and food very basic compared to the camp on the Serengeti, which was excellent. Our stay at the Matemwe Bandas was lovely, very low key and relaxed, staff very friendly and the bungalow was perfect. Clean towels halfway through the week would have been appreciated other than that no complaints. All in all a fabulous and memorable holiday. Thankyou

    we had the best time as a family, a very spiritual experience seeing so many animals and birds in their natural environment. Ed from Pure Zannzibar completely understood what we were after on our trip, for example good food. we had excellant food and service from everyone at both Tent with a View and at Echo Beach. thank you so much the holiady will remain with me always!

    Very knowledgable and helpful with deciding which options would best for us when combining the Kilimanjaro climb with a relaxing week on Zanzibar. Excellent service at each step of the way.


    We couldn't think of a single element that could have been better. The Kilimanjaro climb and support was superb and then unguja lodge was fabulous; just perfect for what we wanted.

    Just a quick one to say that we both made it to the top and she said yes!!! It was a really tough week but well worth it. The weather was perfect and the climb went well.     Now on our way back to Wales after a marvellous couple of weeks out in Tanzania. Saadani, in particular, was a paradise location with game drives followed by swimming and sunbathing on glorious sandy beaches.

    Dear ed,

    We had a wonderful stay at sadaani, the staff there were so kind, and we had wonderful talks with Costa and really enjoyed and appreciated Frank's guiding through the river, safari and village.(we ended donating some desks directly to the school).The new staff, Nick and Jana are really making a good job of the management and were so friendly. We felt very much at home. There was even a little Swiss girl called Pauline, for Molly to play with!

    We are now at kilindi, which is so beautiful that I can't believe it! I don't think that we will be going anywhere during our stay.... It's like heaven....

    Dear Ed

    Thank you for your email. I can’t believe we’ve been home a week already.

    We had a great time in Zanzibar and were blessed with really good weather (though a bit windy at Neptune Pwani a couple of times, soon remedied by moving the sunbeds to positions behind trees!). The 236 Hurumzi was lovely, a really quirky place. They looked after us really well and we all had suites which was rather nice. The birthday meal was good, very memorable with a lovely sunset and Ruth was presented with a cake. One of the ladies who runs the hotel had approached me at breakfast and said that they wanted to do something special for her at the meal, which I thought was very kind. She offered either a cake or bottle of bubbly. I decided on the cake because one of the party doesn’t drink alcohol. Neptune Pwani was lovely too. Stuart and I had an issue on our first evening with water coming through the bathroom ceiling, but this was dealt with very promptly by the maintenance man and a member of housekeeping, and we had no further problems. We spent the week relaxing and eating rather well!

    I think the only negative I can report was when we left Neptune Pwani. There seemed to be a mix up on our flight times between the time we had on our reservation sheets and the time that the driver from Zanzibar Unique had given Ruth on her information sheet, which meant that we got picked up from the hotel a lot earlier than really needed (1.30pm) and meant we spent a lot of time waiting around at Zanzibar Airport for our early evening flight. We ended up with about 5 hours to kill and not much to see or do in the terminal!

    On the whole though it was a truly special, memorable holiday which we will remember for a long time.

    Hi Ed,

    We had a lovely holiday thank you.

    The only hiccup was the transfer back to the airport - there was some confusion about the flight times and we ended up back at the airport a little earlier than we needed so we did have to wait to check in. Just as well as there seemed to be a difficulty in the check in for the flights back into Leeds - I think they were trying to be over helpful in getting the boarding passes all the way through - where we knew we would be able to get the boarding passes for the final flight into Leeds at Schipol - it was lost in translation! It all worked out ok in the end.

    The only other slightly negative comment was that we recieved a phone call the day before we left regarding the departure tax to be paid in dollars - none of the information or guide books any of us had stated this - this was not a problem for us as we had some cash left over but would have been useful to budget for.

    236 Hurumzi was fab - I liked the quirky/ traditional feel - the upgrade was most welcome - thank you. Each of the rooms had their own style - John and I were in the Tour Suite which had a rooftop area complete with swing!! The staff were most helpful and for my birthday they decorated the room. The meal in the evening was excellent -I understand the hotel in under new management and the menu is still in its early days of development - but we had a very enjoyable meal experience and the staff laid on a cake and sang happy birthday.

    On the journey between the hotels we arranged to see some of the sights with the local guide who was most helpful.

    The Neptune Pwani in contrast is a modern resort that I suppose you could find anywhere in the world. However the fact that this hotel was relatively small ensured that the facilities were not crowded.The rooms were luxurious with a high standard of cleanliness. The food was excellent at all mealtimes with a good choice of dishes. My sister and I tried the Spa which again was excellent - though it did appear under-utilised and I think this may have been partly due to the cost - we picked a special offer deal that they were promoting. The bars and choices of cocktails and service both in the bars and beach/poolside was good, I think the only area that could be improved is the night entertainment - some acts were excellent and others were mediocre.

    In all we had a memorable experience in Zanzibar and will certainly recommend your company to others.
